The Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier in Alaska that can be reached by vehicle. This solid ice flow, between the cities of Palmer and Glennallen, flows like a solid river. The region around Matanuska Glacier is a weather hole, where cool air from the glacier forces warm air upward towards the mountain peaks. On this day in fall, a steady rain and low light levels from the sun, help illuminate the cyan colors of the dense ice.
Glacial ice is so blue because the dense ice of the glacier absorbs every other color of the spectrum except blue - so blue is what is reflected back to our eyes. Glacial ice that makes up the Matanuska glacier appears almost cool, blue-turquoise. Its crystalline structure strongly scatters blue light.
