It was early summer and this adult mountain goat was taking a break from watching the kids. A new crop of salad greens were sprouting quickly after a recent rain storm.
The mountain goat’s scientific name is oreamnos americanus. Mountain goats are not goats. They are more related to antelope and are part of the bovidae family. Here on the Beartooth plateua, Mountain goats were reintroduced during the 1940’s.
The Absaroka-Beartooth mountains are home to a wide variety of mammals and plants. Native American alpine wildflowers — species that grow mostly at or above timberline, show their prismatic colors only for a few short weeks during the summer.
